Roy’s Vision of Home
I know in my bones the only possible future is a sustainable one.
We perceive we have this little piece of turf, that we own it. It is separate and distinct from all others. I think we have the false perception that we control everything. And this false perception separates us from each other and indeed ourselves.
About the ways our homes face the street – and are walled off from all other homes on the block.
I began to explore turning this suburban plan inside out, as we must go inward within ourselves to find wholeness. Down go the fences up come vegetables. Garages become workshops, offices and stores. We share a few plug in hybrids and maybe a truck and a few laundry rooms. Corner homes become local gathering places perhaps that almost disappeared corner store - where the fruits of our labor are sold or bartered to others in the neighborhood. We walk and ride our bikes - our homes and neighborhoods become sustainable again.
Community becomes local and vital.
Peak oil will kill big box commerce and return us to bartering and trading with each other. The big box bungle cannot be sustained – trucking cheap goods made elsewhere is not sustainable.
We will again (don’t hold your breath) become a people whose lives are focused upon the watershed in which we live. Our lives revolve upon our local environments. We find our immediate surroundings provides for and sustains us – our food, shelter, livelihoods, relationships and friendships, in short for much that makes our lives full rich and sustainable. We will, of necessity, become much more local creatures than we have known in our lifetimes.
I want to live as a free being with joy and gratitude at the very core of my being.
I live in a home with others – it’s a warm place heated by the sun and the hearts of my fellow travelers. The home is passive solar heated and cooled and my interactions with my “family†are compassionate and passionate.
I am visionary and helper of people. I am friend and creator. I am mender and maker. I hold energy in my hands and heart. Inner knowing weaves the tapestry of my life – I go where I am needed and needed where I am. The web of life is full and my life is love.
My home is one of many in what has come to be called “the new suburbia.†Neighborhoods, “communities†in the truest sense of the word, of city blocks. Each block a community in its self.
Fences are down and gardens are up. Garages are workshops and workplaces, art and healing studios, greenhouses and community gathering places.
Cars and meals and are shared.
Homes are greened – powered by the sun and insulated by recycled materials. “Waste†water is reclaimed and rainwater is harvested.
The street corners are alive with the mingled energies of adjacent blocks. Like ancient cave paintings, mandalas painted in intersections, tell the stories of those who live nearby. Stores, or trading posts and gathering places, gravitate to corners and bring life to street and community alike. Bicycles are picked up and left off. Kids bartering lemonade and “free libraries†feed the energy at corners.
We are connected to the citizens of Gaia through the Internet. Thought, love, energy and goods flow as gifts in the ever increasing web of life.
Life is Spirit having a human experience - a wild ride with ourselves, our fellows and Gaia.
The Spirit of Gaia Lives. And So It Is.
As I write this I recognize other voices in my head…
A world in harmony will be a dreary and boring place and our nature is to war and struggle.
I do not think the last 50 years or so have not been boring…and given the nature of what lies ahead…we have not been born into boring times. I venture to say that this is the most stimulating and challenging and adventurous time that humans have ever existed on Gaia. I do not believe we have the luxury of being bored and those that follow us will surly have their hands full.
I leave it to wiser beings to answer the question about what our proposed or presumed “nature” is or is not. What I do know is that wise people like Elisabet Sahtouris or Barbara Marx Hubbard and in another spectrum Deepak Chopra have positive perspectives about the future of humanity and Gaia. And they all recognize what I stated above; life is Spirit having a human experience.
I hope you enjoy and participate in Visions of Home,
Roy Prince
